Last week I gave a research lecture in the Music Department at Yale, the second Yale University and University of Connecticut British Music Seminar. Like much of my recent work, the one-hour lecture feeds into my developing project on ideology in Britten’s operas. The audience were sparky and the questions invigorating, the generosity of the departments involved was breathtaking, and it was a wonderful trip.

But it was sombre nevertheless: I delivered my paper just hours after reading the horrifying news of the UK government’s cuts to humanities and social sciences in universities – the most gobsmacking attack on universities that could be imagined, and a serious blow to one of the spheres of human activity that does most to inform and sustain democratic activity. There’ll be more about this issue on this blog in due course…
